Since its founding over 20 years ago, the Ballet Folklórico Internacional Majestad Negra (Majestad Negra, literally “Black Majesty”) has represented Puerto Rico on many overseas tours and has actively collaborated with other groups that play musical genres similar to Bomba. Apart from joint performances, they have also organized seminars to exchange musical ideas and experiences, promoting the international recognition and appreciation of Bomba music.
Majestad Negra specializes in the performance of traditional Bomba music, a form of music that originated during the Puerto Rican colonial period. Back then, millions of Africans were abducted to Puerto Rico and became slaves, but in this historical context, Bomba music was born as a result of the cultural practices brought to the island by these enslaved Africans. Bomba is one of the oldest musical genres in Puerto Rico, with a history of at least 225 years. Majestad Negra is committed to preserving and perpetuating this precious musical legacy while showcasing its unique artistry on stages around the world.
