Folk Ensemble Gymnik 吉姆尼克民俗歌舞團

For over six decades, Gymnik has united university performers in regional Slovak dance, song, and live music, celebrating the country's rich folk traditions.

Folk Ensemble Gymnik was founded in 1964 at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Comenius University in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and is one of the country’s representative university-based folk ensembles. For more than sixty years, the group has brought together university students and young performers from across Slovakia, preserving and promoting regional traditions through dance, singing, and live music. It has also maintained an active schedule of domestic and international tours, folklore festivals, and cultural exchanges, building extensive international performance experience through a stage style that is both energetic and firmly rooted in tradition.

【Performance Highlights】
The repertoire covers traditions from regions including Myjava, Nitra, Šariš, Zemplín, Orava, Kysuce, Tekov, and Gemer, ranging from elegant partner dances and lively village celebrations to strongly rhythmic, technically demanding men’s dances. The live ensemble accompanies the dancers with instruments such as violin, viola, double bass, and clarinet. Traditional costumes also vary by region in embroidery, color, headwear, and ways of dressing, allowing audiences to experience the cultural diversity of Slovakia through music, dance, and costume.
